If you’re worried about fitting into your new locale, you have nothing to fear. Charlotte has a bustling economy, one that attracts professionals from all over the country. As a result, native residents aren’t as common as you would think. So many of those living here originated from somewhere else, and that trend is sure to increase. Charlotte is currently the third fastest-growing major city in the U.S., welcoming 60 new residents a day!
One of the perks of having so many Charlotte transplants is that they’ve brought their recipes with them. Charlotte offers samplings of just about any cuisine, but farm-to-table food fusion is the city’s signature flavor.
Considered the second largest banking center in the country, Charlotte is home to several big banks and financial service providers. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Truist Financial have made their homes here, and many Charlotte residents have jobs in the financial sector. It’s not uncommon to see these brands sponsoring happenings around town. From marathons to food drives, banks have helped to create much of the philanthropic programs popular in the area.
The first thing many people think of when Charlotte comes up in conversation is NASCAR. This racing institution has been around since its first 1949 Strictly Stock race and draws enormous crowds to the local Charlotte Speedway. Even if you don’t consider yourself a racing fan, it’s worth going at least once.
Charlotte is also home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, a 5-acre wonder with theater space and high-tech installations about the heritage of NASCAR. You’ll find a lot to do here, including shopping and noshing at their on-site wing restaurant.
Still haven’t gotten your fill of RPMs? Try the Fury 325, billed as the longest steel coaster at over 1.25 miles long! Located at Carowinds amusement park, it crosses the state lines between North and South Carolina. It’s described as a giga coaster, since it has no inverted hills and is built for speed!
Charlotte works hard to foster a sense of community, and show residents and visitors a good time, so there’s no shortage of “just for fun” features. The Musical Parking Garage is located on 270 E. 7th Street and features 36 30-foot-tall light installments that respond to human touch. The garage, formally called “Touch my Building,” is also rumored to have a puzzle component, so bring your friends and solve the mystery. Other quirky hot spots include the Codescape escape rooms, designed by professional special effects artists with themed pirate and alien rooms.
One of the perks of having so many Charlotte transplants is that they’ve brought their recipes with them. Charlotte offers samplings of just about any cuisine, but farm-to-table food fusion is the city’s signature flavor. Kid Cashew, for example, is a patio diners’ delight, with the rustic look of old wood throughout and a traditional chicken dinner to die for. The cast-iron mac-and-cheese is another popular pick; nothing from this restaurant has been frozen or fried! Don’t feel you have to limit your meal to one menu, though—food trucks are plentiful in Charlotte as well. Their food truck association is huge, offering Caribbean, tacos, hibachi, BBQ, and everything in between.
If you’re a fan of the outdoors, there’s no limit to what you can do in Charlotte. With the Great Smoky Mountains just a couple of hours away, you don’t have to go far to experience the majesty of some of the best overlooks, rivers, and hiking trails in the country. For those who stay closer, you can get your fill of adventure through the U.S. National Whitewater Center, which boasts mountain biking trails, rafting, rock wall climbing, and stand-up paddleboarding. It also features trails and cycling sites for amateurs, so people of all ages can enjoy.
